Miralax and info about Laxatives

Laxatives

Laxative Use and Good Bacteria

Julia uses an acidophilus called Jarro Dophilus to replace her good bacteria that is lost while using Miralax and Antibiotics, (the antibiotics are for a different health related issue).


“These (laxatives) will clean out the intestinal bacteria and cause chronic constipation.” You should take an acidophilus to replace the bacteria while using laxatives. (Prescription for Nutritional Healing Pg. 146) DDS acidophilus is dairy free.

Julia is currently on Miralax as a laxative. She has used this for about a year. When we had figured out her diet needs, we tried to take her off the Miralax. This resulted in constipation. We decided to stay on the Miralax until she is off her Antibiotics. Antibiotics can also cause constipation because they too wipe out the good bacteria.

Our doctor advised us to slowly reduce the Miralax when the time comes.


Other Side effects of Miralax

You may become gassy while trying to figure out the correct dosage to maintain a good amount and texture of the poop. Our doctor says you want it soft and formed. Dr. Oz says you want it shaped like an S. Check out his show on poop: http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/poop-primer
In a diaper it is difficult to tell if it came out as an S.

Whole Wheat Breads, Cereals, Crackers, Tortillas

Don't be fooled by the front cover. Please read the ingredients carefuly. You want WHOLE WHEAT and nothing else. It is as simple as that. AVOID the words: enriched whole wheat, multigrain and wheat.

Read the nutritional label as well.

Fiber should be 4 grams or higher, otherwise it's not worth eating. You want your child to have a higher fiber intake than a child without constipation issues.

High Fiber Oatmeal Cookies

Julia’s Favorite Oatmeal Cookies (with Honey)
Ingredients:

Dry ingredients
· 1 cup whole wheat flour (a pinch more depending on the moisture of the mix)
· 1 1/2 cups of Large Flake Rolled Oats (smaller flake is ok too)
· 1/2 tsp baking soda
· 1/2 tsp baking powder
· 1/2 tsp salt
· 1 Tbsp Cinnamon
· 1/2 tsp Nutmeg (optional)
Wet ingredients
· 1/2 cup honey
· 1/2 cup oil (corn, grapeseed or olive) * you can also use some applesauce to replace some of the oil if you wish*
· 1 Tablespoon Molasses
· 1 egg (beat with 1 Tbsp Water)
· 1 tsp Vanilla
Yummy ingredients
· 1/2 cup raisins
· 1/2 cup walnuts
Preparation:
1. In a large bowl, mix all the dry ingredients together.
2. In a medium bowl, mix all the wet ingredients together. Hint: when measuring out the honey, spray the measuring cup with oil or baking spray--your honey won't stick).
3. Mix the wet stuff with the dry stuff. Add the raisins and walnuts and mix. If the mixture seems too wet, add a bit of flour. If it isn't binding together very well, you may wish to add an egg white.
4. COOL the mix for 20 minutes in the fridge.
5. Preheat the oven to 335 degrees (lower temperature due to the honey in the recipe which will burn more easily).
6. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto your baking sheet (I recommend lining the baking sheet with parchment paper). Press down with a fork to ensure even cooking.
7. Bake for about 15 - 20 minutes or until golden on the bottom of the cookie. The cookies freeze very well and make a great snack! Enjoy.

Julia and Pooh Bear eat plenty of Fiber

Julia drinks almost 1 oz of water per 1 lb of body wieght - at this time she is about 25 lbs. Extra water is needed for a high Fiber Diet.
